Planning the Birth of Your Twins
One of the questions I hear most often is, “How will I deliver my babies?” The answer is that I’ll create a birth plan that’s personalized just for you. Together, we’ll consider your preferences, the type of multiple pregnancy you’re carrying, your babies’ positions, and any medical conditions that may affect your delivery. If your first baby is head-down (cephalic), a vaginal birth may be a safe option. However, I’ll also explain that there is a small chance—about 5%—that the second twin may still require a cesarean section after the first baby is born. My priority is always the safety of both you and your babies while respecting your wishes whenever possible.
There are situations where I will recommend a planned cesarean section because it offers the safest approach for delivery. These include when the first baby is in a breech or transverse position, if you have a monochorionic monoamniotic twin pregnancy, a triplet pregnancy, or if one baby has significant growth restriction. I may also recommend a cesarean if you or your babies have another medical condition that makes vaginal delivery unsafe. Throughout your pregnancy, I’ll discuss your options with you, answer all your questions, and help you make the decision that gives you the greatest confidence as you prepare to welcome your babies.
