Preconception Counseling
If you’re planning to become pregnant, I invite you to schedule a Preconception Counseling visit with me. Ideally, we’ll meet at least three months before you start trying to conceive so we can create a personalized plan for a healthy pregnancy.
During our consultation, you and I will discuss several important aspects of your health and pregnancy planning, including:

Your Family History
I will ask about both your family history and your partner’s family history to identify any inherited conditions or genetic disorders that could affect your future baby. This information also helps me determine if you need additional screening or monitoring during pregnancy. Please let me know about any family history of high blood pressure, diabetes, birth defects, twins or multiple pregnancies, mental health conditions, deafness, blindness, or other significant medical conditions.
Your Medical History
I want to understand your overall health before pregnancy. We’ll review any previous surgeries, existing medical conditions, medications or supplements you’re taking, and any allergies that may affect your pregnancy or prenatal care.
Your OB/GYN History
You and I will also discuss your gynecologic and obstetric history, including any previous pregnancies, contraceptive use, menstrual history, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and any other reproductive health concerns.
Your Lifestyle and Habits
We’ll talk about your current lifestyle and identify ways to optimize your health before pregnancy. I’ll discuss nutrition, exercise, smoking or vaping, alcohol or drug use, and other habits that may influence your pregnancy. Together, we’ll also review any social, behavioral, environmental, or medical factors that could increase pregnancy risks and develop strategies to help you achieve the healthiest possible pregnancy.
Preconception Counseling Testing
Depending on your individual needs, I may recommend a physical examination and selected laboratory tests during your visit.
Your physical examination may include a pelvic exam, blood pressure measurement, and weight assessment. Laboratory tests may be ordered to screen for conditions such as hepatitis, rubella immunity, diabetes, thyroid disorders, and other health concerns that are important to address before pregnancy.
PRECONCEPTION COUNSELING TESTING
During your appointment, you may also undergo some testing, which may include a physical exam and/or some lab tests. A physical exam may include a pelvic exam, checking your blood pressure, and recording your weight. Lab tests may be done to check for certain conditions and diseases and may include testing for hepatitis, rubella, diabetes, thyroid problems, and more.
