To better understand your baby’s Sacrococcygeal Teratoma (SCT), I will perform a comprehensive evaluation designed to assess the tumor and its effects on your baby’s health. This evaluation begins with a detailed fetal ultrasound, where I carefully examine your baby and evaluate the tumor’s size, appearance, and blood supply. I may also recommend a fetal MRI to obtain more detailed images of the tumor, your baby’s spine, and the surrounding pelvic structures. In addition, I will perform a fetal echocardiogram to determine how hard your baby’s heart is working, since larger tumors can place significant stress on the cardiovascular system. I also understand that this diagnosis can be emotionally overwhelming, so I will connect you with our social worker, who can provide guidance and support for any practical or emotional needs you and your family may have.

Once all of your baby’s evaluations are complete, I will meet with our multidisciplinary fetal care team, which includes specialists in maternal-fetal anesthesiologist , pediatric surgery, and neonatology, to carefully review every finding. Afterward, I will sit down with you to explain the results in a way that is easy to understand. Together, we will discuss the diagnosis, review all available prenatal treatment options if intervention becomes necessary, and develop a personalized plan for the remainder of your pregnancy and your baby’s delivery. I will also explain what you can expect after birth, including your baby’s evaluation, possible surgical treatment, and long-term outlook.
