Impact

What does a multiple pregnancy entail? Multiple pregnancies are considered high-risk pregnancies, presenting some maternal and/or fetal complications that are higher than in single pregnancies, so their control must be stricter. Specifically, there is a higher risk of perinatal complications :

Risk of premature labor . This is due to uterine overdistension, which can cause contractions or cervical shortening. Cervical length will be monitored
during visits using transvaginal ultrasound.

Risk of preeclampsia (gestational hypertension). To prevent it, daily treatment with 150mg of acetylsalicylic acid is recommended for all multiple
pregnancies from the first trimester until week 36 of pregnancy.

Iron deficiency anemia . It is typical of the third trimester, and oral iron supplementation is often necessary.

Intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy . Due to an obstruction of bile flow from the liver. It manifests as itching on the palms of the hands and soles of the feet.

Intrauterine growth restriction . It usually affects only one of the fetuses. To detect it, routine ultrasounds will be performed to estimate the weight of each
fetus.
