TTTS can occur without the pregnant woman experiencing any symptoms. If symptoms do occur, the most common are:

  • Abdominal distension: There is an increase in abdominal volume that differs from the normal growth of the pregnant belly in that it is a rapid distension, occurring within a few days and generally uncomfortable, associated with abdominal pressure. This distension persists in the mornings.
  • Contractions: The increase in amniotic fluid in the recipient fetus’s sac can cause contractions, which are characterized by a sensation of abdominal pressure and hardening of the lower abdomen where the uterus is located in a cyclical manner.
